LGBTIA+ explained

You have probably come across the acronym LGBT (or LGBTQ or even LGBTTQIA) many times. But have you ever wondered what these letters stand for?

We’ll try to bring some light to the matter. The first acronym used to represent the “gay community” was LGB, which comprised lesbian, gay, and bisexual people. All three of them refer to sexual orientations. In the 1990s, the transgender community made its way to the acronym and we got the well-known LGBT, even though the T refers to gender identities. Since then, the LGBT community has evolved a lot, and so has its need to make these changes visible.

According to Pink News, nowadays, the full acronym is LGBTQQIAAP (See more: https://www.pinknews.co.uk/2017/11/06/how-has-the-lgbt-acronym-evolved/).

At Tradoctas, we use LGBTIA+ (‘lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, asexual, plus’), as per Ro Sileo’s suggestion when creating our LGBTIA+ Division led by them. Ro explained to Lía and María Leticia that “there is not only one valid acronym, it can vary a lot and that’s okay.”
